Mane leads Liverpool rout of Porto

Sadio Mane scored a hat-trick as Liverpool thrashed Porto 5-0 to put themselves in complete control of their Champions League last-16 tie after the first leg in Portugal. Pitting super-smart PCs against humans proves nothing. The really money should go into getting the artificial intelligences to battled it out with each other. Was anyone surprised that Google's AlphaGo program, developed as part of its DeepMind operation, defeated the world's best Go player ? Deep Blue beat Garry Kasparov. Watson prevailed on Jeopardy . It's time we stopped pitting computers against people; there's no point. I wasn't around for the Industrial Revolution, but did we pit man against machine back then? Did a bunch of guys pulling boxcars compete against a steam locomotive? No. It's silly and so are these current AI exercises. It is great that one computer can house the entire Library of Congress. But until one of these AI systems can synthesize an actual new idea from the knowledge contained in all those books, these machines are still nothing more than grandiose, soulless adding machines.
